You Might Become A Biscuit

a large civilisation belonging to a new alien race is discovered on the spinward edge of Dominion space. rather than take them over (which, perhaps, they can't do yet) the Dominion contract with them to provide transport within their space. it was hard to do this, because the Dominion didn't consider Taigy space as Dominion space, and the Dominion transport system would take you anywhere in Dominion space. in the end it came down to a search for the one Dominion system where this new alien race was represented. Tens of thousands of railway stations and only one of them connects to the new bus service.

We found them eventually. The Taigy starships were as big as anything the Dominion had in space, at last as far as we could tell from inside. We never saw what they looked like on the outside; no windows. The undersides of the ship docked with the roof of the local travel office - a place that also acted like a city-sized hotel and each with its own Seamy Underside. These places were very popular, because technically they were outside Dominion control. And law.

Every time you boarded a Taigy starship, one of their greetings robots (thing shaped like a compost bin faced in green marble with red streaks) would say: "We are required to say: You might become a biscuit."

Responses to this were revealing. Not much else was known of this odd warning. "I might, huh? Has it happened recently?"

"Not in my lifetime," the robot would say.

"Nor mine," someone else would say.

"What the hell." the passenger would say.

but one day, it happened.
