let us spin some theories. a reaction to the harshness of reality in modern-day britain? most people have given up on the idea of having a career or finding a job with any degree of personal satisfaction; the dole just extends far enough to cover rent, minimal food supplies and a subscription to an ethnobotany newsletter that tells you which plant life in your back yard will take you out of your skull for a day. all you need is something comforting, warm, non-threatening.. and the Teletubbies fits that demand. the bizarre quality that taints everything in the show is either an honest-to-"Bob" attempt to get away from the usual kid's show fare - talking animals, daffy human presenters in stripy overalls who are playing off subliminal fantasies of seducing Andy-Pandy, more talking animals, talking trains, talking helicopters and incomprehensibly boring "science" shows. as with Bugs Bunny cartoons, the Teletubbies aren't just aimed at the young child market. if you're still tripping at seven AM, you don't want to have to deal with the stylised semi-violence of Voltron or He-Man or, "Bob" help us, the Samurai Pizza Cats. you want something calm to schmooze you out of that nasty Real reality and into a safe reality. who knows? perhaps the Conspiracy in england engineered it that way; they realised that there was a certain percentage of the populace who just weren't going to get jobs; might as well keep them sedated with nice soft television shows. i'd like to imagine that the last part is true. it'd mean they've given up on the program proposed by Jello Biafra, in which they're all rounded up and sent off to die in some war. |
