Popslash

Where You Are by Amber.
A popslash AU with Lance as a serial killer, and it's just wild. The whole story is a stumbling, scratchy ride through Lance's head as he tries to figure out what he's doing and whether he even cares. Pretty and eerie.

Eyes Hair Mouth by Stubbleglitter.
Chris and Justin, and JC, and they hurt, and it's really, really good like that. Happy endings are for suckers.

Or What They Think Is Love by Katie.
I have this little thing with AUs where, if they're good, they just fucking kill me. And this one is very good. Justin and Lance in Boston, music and politics and some Nick Carter in there also. And, yes, dead.

Project Pride by kate.
JC thinks he should be a gay American icon, because yes. Perfect JC voice, perfect Chris voice, and so much fun.

Remember Every End by Katie.
Nick and AJ, love, disfunction, all wrapped in tiny, drabble-sized packages. Reading it is just fascinating.

Skateland by Mary the Fan.
An AU with all the boys, hand-holding, blowjobs, and a roller rink. Very nice.

Ring The Alarm by Lise.
It's an alternate universe centered around Christina, who I don't usually go for, but Lise makes me like her, makes me want to read about her, makes her fascinating and crazy-amazing. The whole story is such a wild ride, feral and smooth and sexy, and circular, and very nice to read.

5 x 5 by Silvia Kundera.
I like this because each drabble is a clear, pure slice of the relationship, complete in itself, beautifully written, fully realized. They're unconnected, you can read them in any order you want, but they all seem to hang together and feed off of each other, and add to each other.

Buying A Clue by Lennie.
So much fun. Lance is the evil arch-villain and Justin is his trophy mistress, only that's not the way it is at all. I have not the words to tell you how happy this makes me.

Sushi by Cecilia.
Reading this always makes me smile. I love Cecilia's writing style, how simply she says everything and how wonderfully it all slides together. It's very nice.

Thirty by Synchronik.
This is a series, with links to the first section. It's one of the first Lance/Chris stories that I read, that I liked, and it's really kind of quietly amazing. I like the relationship dynamic, I like the dialogue, I like the way he writes it, I pretty much like everything about this story.

In Focus by kate.
I have to rec anyone who can write something like this: "Britney feels like she's been watching her life through beekeepers' gauze. All fuzzy, big gloves on. Pretty Britney over there, see?"

This World A Hunting Is by L.C.
Have I recced everything by L.C. yet? I think, out of every author I've read, that she's my favorite, and this story is a good example as to why. It's het, and incest, and AU, and normally those things would weigh the story down, make it fall apart, but the way she writes it makes perfect sense, and it fits, and it's glorious.

Marked by Tiffany Rawlins.
This is an AU, and also a crossover with Fastlane, and the whole thing is just so much fun. A work in progress, but all in the same file.

And by Wax Jism.
Reading this always makes me feel a little tipsy, a little sick, and a whole lot giddy. It's an interesting premise, and the tension between Justin and Lance is really nice.

Stop by kel.
Quietly, calmly psychotic, and the writing is lovely. I just can't get over the idea of this, and kel writes it so well.

And We Drown by xoverau.
The way this happened was, Nico asked for improv words, and then wrote this set of unbelievable stories from them, crazy and nonsensical and twisted and lovely and strange and just amazing. This is my favorite, but do yourself a favor and read all her stuff. I would kill to have the inside of my head look like this.

Beyond Ganymede by Teanna.
Cold and stark like outer space, like the inside of Lance's head, and all the things he wants and when he gets them they aren't nearly enough.

Been You Before by steph.
I like this because it slips around the edges of Justin's head, it's subtle and honest at the same time. I like this story because it's poetry, and it's Timbertrick, and it's very, very good.

Breathe by Glockgal.
Oh my god. JC's dreaming, only he isn't, and his nose talks and giggles turn into bubbles and it's hallucinogenic and so, so cool.

we get IDEAS! by Various.
This isn't fiction. What it is, is a group of good popslash authors, answering questions about how they write, the types of stories they like, the way they think about the characters, lots of things. It's very interesting, being able to look inside another writer's head like this, and see the way they think and write.

The Best of It by Mere.
I love the premise of this, and I love Mere's writing style. She manages to show the relationships between the guys without actually coming out and saying anything, and on top of that she takes a really cool idea and makes it work.

Mighty Brite Bright by Nia.
Every time I think I'm burned out on popslash, I come back to this story, to remind me of why I love the character so much. It's just, yeah. Pretty much amazing.

Comes Back by L.C.
Sad, gritty, cold and salty and Irish, much with the Irish. This is the most charitable (not to mention lovely) example of what I, at my most uncharitable moments, think JC/Chris would be like. And if that doesn't sound like a good thing, trust me, it is. Also, the dialogue fucking kicks.

Complicated by Stubbleglitter.
The perfect badfic. The absolute funniest story in the entire universe, and so terrible it's almost cool. And the markers, oh my god.

The Last Place by Jae W.
My AU kink, my Timbertrick kink, and my well-hidden (er, until now) stories-that-rip-my-heart-out kink, all rolled into one of the fucking best, most painful stories I've read. Makes me happy.

The Haircuts by k8.
Mod!sync, an alternate universe and work in progress, with links to the first story. I just really love her writing style, it's so distinctive and different and just. Wow.

Alcohol by Cappuccino.
Not exactly an AU, but still one of the fucking wildest rides a story's taken me on in a while. The boys get kidnapped, JC gets shot, they're all sad and desperate and it's not a happy ending but it feels. so. good.

Acclimate by Giddy.
Lance is leaving for space and Chris won't miss him. I like this story because it takes me through every shift and bend in Chris's thoughts, it's slow and subtle and interesting, the way we (and Chris) slowly realize exactly what he feels for Lance. It's a very nice read.

Rising Sun by Lise.
Really, I should be reccing her entire page, because Lise is an amazing writer, but I just can't get this one out of my mind. The idea of it, and the things she does with that idea are just. I have no words.

Un-named drabble by L.C.
I'm probably cheating with this. I mean, it doesn't even have a name. But, but, Joey's a red wagon! And JC has knitted booties! And really, this is just a work of fucking genius. One of the best Joey characterizations ever, and in less than three hundred words, too. L.C. rocks my world.

You Can Read In Whatever You're Needing To by kel.
This hurts, it's funny and softly, quietly painful, perfectly in character. Just, fucking Chris, man. He's just, and kel knows him and she writes him and it's just. Yeah. I keep coming back to this story, I can't stop reading it. Go see why.

Everything by Amber.
Um, Chris is in Backstreet and vacationing in Wyoming. This story is so much fun. I mean, tacos! How can you go wrong with tacos?

Louisiana by Synchronik.
This just broke my heart when I first read it. It's so lovely, everything's just thick and heavy and hazy, and sad.

Two Straight Guys In Wisconson: The Incredible Adventures of Chris and His Cock by Rhys.
Just exactly what it says. This story makes me go "wheee".

Blue Skies by kel.
This is a set of five vignettes, how each boy came to Orlando, the parts of their lives that led them to form Nsync, and it's just this perfect character study. The boys don't interact with each other, but kel shows the spaces where they'd fit into each other, the places where they'd scrape and catch like velcro, the parts of them that came before and that made them who they are.

Canadia by V.
V does these really interesting things with dialogue, and her characters are normal people, they can be jerks to each other and mean and petty, and they're still friends, and they're still completely in character. It's just a really great story.

Visceral As VCR by Liberty Ginger.
Frick and Frack and this is the zaniest, funniest, sweetest little bit of insanity that I've ever seen. Pure fucking cracked-out poetry.

A Local Band of Troubadors by Sandy Keene.
Chris and JC and shoestrings and wet leaves. I like this story for the images, I like how the entire thing is made up of tiny details like mosaic tiles, just these gorgeous brief descriptions that say everything about the relationship without really saying anything. It's concrete and surreal at the same time, and really beautiful.

Coldhearted by Jae W.
Um, the Nsync boys make a bet to see who can sleep with Backstreet. There's blackmail, intrigue, spanking, alcohol, and lots and lots of sex. Oh, and it's one of the funniest and coolest and craziest stories I've ever read. It's a series, with a link to the first part.

Goldengrove by L.C.
AJ/Eminem really shouldn't be this gorgeous. Short and fierce, it's cool like cigarettes and motorcycles and it hurts and it's just so damn good. I'm just. Yeah, speechless. Go read.

Sleep to Dream by Lise.
Just. Fucking. Unbelievable. Justin thinks he's crazy, and sometimes people agree with him. It's just so thick, and painful and the fucking ending, Lance singing and the whole story is just so gorgeous, I can't even say. Oh my god.

Save Yourself by Tiffany Rawlins.
What it's like at the end of the world. I like this because I can't not like it, because it's so sad and gorgeous and it's like a hook in my heart, it just pulls and pulls. So yes, am reccing it because it's eaten my head.

Everyday by MI.
Part of the Buddy Holly series, this is just a really sweet little piece about Lance trying to fit in, and Chris, and hamburgers. And the swearing, which is just hot.

Bubble Gum by Cappucino.
So, yeah, I might have a thing for AUs. And yeah, I might have a thing for Timbertrick. And yeah, this might be both an AU and Timbertrick, but it's also just this crazy-amazing story that left me boggling, open-mouthed and shocked and delighted when I first read it. It has the best fucking ending I've ever read, ever.

English As He Spoke It by Sandy Keene.
Poetic and fucking beautiful, it's the abstraction of love and intimacy and heartbreak at the same time that it's a finely-detailed and realistic study of the same. If I make no sense, it's because this story has taken all sense away from me. It's just gorgeous, so go read.

Take These Lies by Tiffany Rawlins.
I can't describe it any better than this: "Lance felt like his arms were melting and the rest of him was hot like he'd come out of a cold pool and laid out to dry on the baking concrete, steam rising off the wet body print." Just, guh.

Just A Figment by Stubbleglitter.
I like this story mostly because of the descriptions, how fascinating they are, the ideas and feelings and sensations they invoke. It isn't just a grocery list of details; every sense is used in a way that heightens the narrative. It's pretty much one of the most beautful things I've ever read.

Borne by Jae W.
I really don't have any way to describe this. It's a wingfic, but it's also just this beautiful story of Chris and Justin and blood and dirt and purple-gold feathers. It's seriously fucking sad, and so perfect that it hurts.

Barely Breathing by Liberty Ginger.
This story is harsh, the way I always think of Justin and JC, like that heavy formal velvet that feels like it's cutting your fingers when you run your hands over it the wrong way. I've always thought they'd scrape over each other instead of fitting right, and this is the story that, to me, proves it.

Fragile, by Julad.
Hahaha. And bwahahaha. And again hee and snorf and giggle. Chris wants Lance to be his emotional iceberg.

World Would End by torch.
Just, so simple and simply beautiful. The thing about this story is, nothing's explained, but nothing needs to be, you know? And torch is just a really good writer, the kind I want to be if I ever grow up, the kind of writer that turns me green. And this story is a good example of why.

Because Yes by V.
Oh my god, can't. stop. laughing. Justin is pregnant and Chris is the father, only not at all. You gotta read it.

Butter by Dale.
This is. I can't explain Dale other than to say she loves details and uses them better than anyone I know. She describes the way light filters in through a window and the smell of butter and the feel of it when you kiss someone, and sex and love and the need to draw blood and how they all three spin together, and it's all gorgeous and intense and it fits the narrative perfectly.

Hackery by Georgina.
This story is just neat. An AU where Justin and Nick are computer hackers working for the government, and they wear spandex and play candy vampire assasins and it is damn fun. It's a work in progress, with a link to the first section.

The Rest of the Time They Sleep by Mere.
I have no fucking words. I read this story and every time the world turns over. You just have to trust me on this. Read it. Now.

West Virginia by Sandy Keene.
Dude, Justin and Lance and car chases and guns and Chinese food and pot. Seriously, reading this is a blast. There's nothing like a good shoot-out (and it is not an AU) to make me all giggly and happy.

Blue Morning by Lise.
Just, so quiet and gorgeous and intense at the same time. It's just a slice of them, this little tiny piece, but it says everything.

Deal by xoverau.
Wade and Eminem. Dude.

Psycho Boy by Lise.
Kevin kidnaps Justin to write songs for the Backstreet Boys. Lance kidnaps O-Town to make a trade. I die laughing. It's a very simple chain of events.

Harry Potter

Crucius by Dolores Crane.
"Harry in his bedsit, though hardly aware of it: no-one to watch him and the neighbours were out so they couldn't complain about the noise and he was jumping about, eyes open to make sure he didn't fall but blind, music so loud it jarred his body and emptied his mind, music so loud he could inhabit it, step out of his own life and inhabit it, lungs filling and shouting along with Bob Mould 'then you get tight-lipped how do I know what you think... said I'm sorry I said I'm sorry I...' He could never say it to Snape, of course, but this was better, saying it like this. He filled the music and it filled him and there was nothing outside, nothing waiting to trip him up, no sarcasm, no failure. Until the song ended and he was alone in the ugly, empty room."

Click by Nope.
A list of photographs.

Ops by Sightlights.
Draco is a spy. The Harry/Draco interaction here kills me.

Matter of Interest by Charli J.
The opposite of caring is indifference. Harry wants to try.

Faded laughter against her ear by Mary Borsellino.
Ginny doesn't feel almost-fifteen.

A Modest Proposal by Telanu.
I don't believe in Harry/Snape, as a rule. Years of enmity and mortal hatred do not affection make, especially not with the way the books are going. But pre-OotP versions of the pairing can be surprisingly sweet, and with the snark and sarcasm keeping it from being cloying or too sentimental, it's really a lot of fun.

Invisible to See by FayJay.
"Draco was growing accustomed to having one whole end of the table to himself; in truth he found dining at the Slytherin table considerably less disturbing than mealtimes back at the Manor during the interminable days since his mother's death. That had been excruciating. Now that he had more or less got his head around the fact that his coterie had vanished and the dregs of Slytherin were suddenly the sum total of Slytherin, Draco was almost able to find mealtimes relaxing."

The Most Ridiculous First Name I've Ever Heard by Dazzler.
This story is so cool. Lycanthropy might just be as bad as the propaganda says it is. Creepy and plausible.

A Strong Defense, by Ellen Fremedon.
Snape and Remus, after OotP, one way they could fit together.

Over Tea by DementorDelta.
The peculiar friendship between Snape and McGonagall, conversations held over tea.

Still Life by Amalin.
"Harry hadn't wanted his portrait done. Once he had realized the lasting quality of wizarding life, he had gone on a rampage and cut up all his photographs. His own eyes had winked up at him as he attacked the photos with scissors; when he found Colin's stash of negatives, he had burned everything at once. "I don't want to exist in twenty thousand autographed photos," he'd snapped at his friends when they questioned him. "When I'm dead, I'm dead." Ron had been in charge of eliminating stray pictures of Harry during the war. He had always secretly resented the job, but anyway, now he is dead. So is Harry. Harry forgets this sometimes."

The Tale of the Shining Prince by Illuferret.
This flips canon over, looking at parts of Harry, Draco, Snape, and Lucius Malfoy that are visible in the books but aren't often explored in fanfic. Also, you know, it's pretty.

A List of Draco Malfoy's Faults and its sequel Continuation by trin.
"Harry could have sworn Malfoy had a collar around his own neck with the words: Property of the Malfoy Family on it, but he couldn’t be sure. Malfoy was such a bloody prude; didn’t even loosen his tie in summer. And he was positive that he’d seen Malfoy glance at the exposed hollow of his throat, when Harry had slung his tie around his neck and walked around Hogwarts with his shirt unbuttoned all the way into the V of his ribboned vest. Perv. Voyeur. Little blond Chihuahua voyeur."

Open Your Eyes by blue.
Creepy and very pretty.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice by Laura Jaquez Valentine.
Harry Potter gen, a story set in the future where Harry becomes Snape's apprentice. A work in progress, it's written much in the same style as the books, keeping Snape just as much of a jerk as he always was, but also giving him this absolutely lovely new dimension, as a teacher and as a person. It almost makes me wish Harry's been in Slytherin, which, yeah. Just read.

Trash by V.
Short, smooth, with a little kick at the end. Harry/Draco makes me happy, and this is why.

Double Dare by Silvia Kundera.
Draco and Harry are so insane. This story is so much fun.

The Familiar by Resonant.
Harry turns himself into a toad, and Snape has him for a pet for the summer. And then it gets really interesting. This is funny and believable, and a very nice read.

Precision Control by Katiebec.
This was the first HP story I ever read, and it's still one of my favorites. I like Katiebec's writing style, because it's like slipstream, like stream-of-consciousness on crack, where everything matters but nothing makes sense but everything makes sense and fits together perfectly. Colin Creevy and Gregory Goyle, and holy god is it well done.

The Glory of the Hummingbird by L.C.
Peter. I like Peter in this story. I like Peter Pettigrew in this story. Peter makes sense to me, I understand his plight, and I find myself wishing he and Remus would get it on. I'd be freaked out by myself if this wasn't such a fucking good story.

Space Oddity by Dale.
Just gorgeous, seriously. There's this savagery, death and destruction and insanity and it's all wrapped carefully in this soft blanket of beauty and quiet.

Never Smile At A Crocodile by Marvolo.
Ginny Weasley and Tom Riddle, and she's his china doll. This story is lewd and nasty and poetic, it's like putting lipstick marks on Fabrege eggs, or tearing at lace stockings with your teeth. It's just a tiny sketch, but it's also a perfect snapshot of their relationship, and one of the only het pairings I can stand.

Theme and Variation by L.C.
Just, oh my god. L.C. is this really amazing creature, half poet and half smut goddess, and in this story she's also half twisted psychopathic bloody ax murderer. Yes, I know that makes three halves, but still. This story is fucking unbelievable, an ode to torture and desperation and bloodlust, and I can't breathe the whole time I'm reading it, every time.

Smallville

Casualties by Penelope-Z.
I can't say anything about this that Penelope hasn't said already; the best way I can describe this story is "smooth and fluid like mercury", and savage in its own way.

Interstitial by Punk.
This captured me, is the best way I can put it. I read it, and had to reread it because I remembered all these perfect moments that I wanted to remember, and then I reread it again just to make sure I hadn't missed anything. I also very much like the plastic fish.

Sugar Rush by Pablo.
I like both the premise of this story and the language. Pablo's writing style is simple and thick at the same time, and this is just a really nice read.

Skin Your Knee by Pearl-o.
I like this because it's sweet but not sickly, it's Martha being human, and a mother, and it's just a really nice, softly complicated little relationship she builds here between the three of them, Clark and Lex and Martha.

Boys! Raise Giant Mushrooms In Your Cellar! by Julad.
Part of the Bradbury Title Challenge. Clark eats daffodils. Pete makes a fabulous protagonist. I like a het couple. Julad turns the world upside-down, in a sweet, light, wonderful way.

The Very Secret Thoughts of Clark Kent by Viridian5.
Um. "Lana is dressed like a marshmallow Peep today, pink and fluffy. Ew. Once Chloe showed me that website with the scientists who did those tests on Peeps and found out that nothing can destroy Peep eyes, not even acid. I figure that Lana’s eye makeup is like that." Just, yeah.

The Wasteland by jenn.
I see Clark being necessarily cruel, I see Lex trying to figure out his emotions, I see them using each other and hurting each other and working their way into something. And I like it. This is Clark/Lex that I can understand, not just that I can enjoy. It's a Clark/Lex story that earns everything.

The Butterfly Effect by the Spike.
A way that makes a happy ending possible. Clark is smart and Lex is high and the whole thing is seriously intense and insane and very cool.

Mercy by Koi.
Oh my god. Just, yeah, that. I like this story because it's completely in character for both the Superman comics-canon and the Smallville TV-show-canon, and yet springboards off of both of them into something raw and original.

The Prophet of Eden by Destina Fortunato.
I like this because of the format, mostly, because the way the story is written made me go back about three times and completely change my ideas about where the plot was going. I love it when that happens.

due South

You Get What You Need by aerye.
I have, technically, finished this, but only in pieces, because ever time I get to a certain point my heart just goes crack and I have to stop and come back to it later, picking up where I'm pretty sure I left off. A Ray/Ray story that shows just exactly why they'd be right for each other, not because it's perfect, not because it's even good. It just is what it is, and it hurts, and yeah.

Carapace by ren.
Fraser isn't perfect, and Ray's the only one who sees it. Short, quiet, and poetic, it really resonates.

Ray Rubs It by debchan.
Um. Frank Zappa the cleaning product. Songs about erections. Ray and Fraser talking, in the snow, being just exactly themselves, making me happy.

Pointy Chin by Basingstoke.
I can totally see this. So, so cool.

Twice Descending by Destina Fortunato.
Oh, god. This is so beautiful that it hurts.

Juggling Act by Speranza.
Hahaha, midgets. And angry clowns. Mimes and snakes and masturbating budgies and, and, yes. Very cool.

Gift Horse by Julad.
Almost stream-of-consciousness, but it's more like just Ray, enjoying his senses, taking us along for the ride. Very wordhappy, very cool.

Eight Sessions by Speranza.
A rather dark story that does a wonderful job of exploring the relationship between Fraser and Kowalski, and is also funny and hot and everything Speranza does so well. And dude, therapy. How can you possibly go wrong?

Chicago's Most Wanted by Speranza.
Um, Fraser gets amnesia and becomes a criminal mastermind. Really. No, really. And it's funny and hot and interesting and believable, and damn fun.

LotR RPS

Fantasy by Cimorene.
Hot and sweet, like melting chocolate.

Positivity by rave.
I love this so much. Dominic and Elijah are perfect, just like this, and I seriously fucking love the way she writes them.

Ai! Aníron Legolas by Dale Edmonds.
This is a work in progress, and it's just so thick and painful, you can feel how much they want to be with each other, and even more you can feel everything that's keeping them apart. I love this because it hurts, and it makes me want to hurt more.

The Te Anau series by buffett.
Sean and Elijah, fucking with each other. Power plays, arguments, cocksucking. Well, sorta. You gotta read it.

Negative Polarisation by Marymeg.
Elijah and Orlando wake up one morning and find that they've turned into boys. Seriously fucking hilarious, this is crack on crack with a side of crack, and I love it.

In White by Wax Jism.
Elijah Wood in a dress. Am I the only one with this kink?

Maya by V.
My three favorite lotrips characters on vacation in India, and it's dazzling bright and sweet like foreign air and I'm not being very helpful, am I? Just, read it. You won't be sorry. It's lovely.

Shimmers by Bartleby.
This is so fucking sad, and soft. Dominic alone with his thoughts, and I love it because it's like glass shards, the different parts of Dominic's life that aren't Elijah, and how that cuts him.

Bizarre Love Triangle by Namarie.
So sweet, not saccharine or anything, just really really sweet. There's no other way to describe it.

Firefly

Be Careful What You Wish For by runaway scrape.
runaway scrape makes me think about the Firefly universe, about canon and possibilities and consequences. Of course fixing River's head would turn out like this. Of course it would.

Powder Burns by Lemon Lashes.
Zebras. Crossdressing. Royal jelly. Lemon Lashes reworks the episode "War Stories", showing every character and the twists between them. She has a wonderful writing style, and an ability to incorporate completely random ideas seamlessly into her narrative. This is part of a series, but can be read on its own.

Cradle Elbows Wide by Vehemently.
"There was a pair of sisters, Gaelach nationalists from Green, who went through and chopped up the pile of boots for him. He didn't know why they volunteered, and he thought they'd gone crackers, but he watched them for a few minutes on the second day of that and figured it out. They were breach-loading the grommets, see, the lace-grommets from the boots, into their shotguns, to weight their buckshot. He asked the one who still had both eyes about it, and she said something about her illustrious ancestor shooting at The Man with buttons when he'd run out of bullets."

Left Behind by Anna.
Ana's stories are thick and harsh, taking the dark corners of Joss's world and squeezing them closer together, adding dirt and poetry. There are consequences here, bits of reality that the show doesn't usually show us, but that fit perfectly with the Firefly universe. This is my favorite of hers, but read all of them.

Elismor's Firefly Drabbles.
Read "Understudy in .38 Caliber", and then read everything else, and then read "Hope Floats" and then read everything again. Elismor knows these characters and loves them, and does right by them in subtle, off-the-wall and quietly gorgeous ways. She makes me happy.

Weeks, Seasons by dafnap.
A Mal/Inara story that works, that convinces me.

Dominoes by arachne.
Mal wants Inara but he'll settle for Simon. Painful, but hopeful at the same time.

Other

A Postscript to the North Wind by Novanumbernine. Original.
A short, beautiful story about friendship, and tradition, and expressions of love. And snowflakes.

Thought Processes by Voleuse. Gilmore Girls.
The inside of Rory's head is one freaky place. I love the cacophany here. This is a short piece, minimalist and yet very full.

Baiting The Trap by DVS. The Professionals.
Dude, Cowley is a freak. A brilliant freak, who refuses to see the humanity in his agents even when he's whacked in the face with it. Surgeons, indeed.

Worse Has Happened by eddy. Pirates of the Caribbean.
Jack may be too clever for his own good. Every character in this is perfect.

Between Us Still We Breed A Mystery by Lady Jaida. Good Omens.
A drabble. Aziraphale, the Agreement, and how he has changed from Eden to now. Subtle, and very nice.

these walls are paper thin by Jess. Dilbert.
Wally is the cartoon male Adonis. Jess takes Dilbert's world and cracks it open, and what she finds inside is mealy and sour and bloody and so beautiful.

I Like It Like That by Mallory Klohn. Queer As Folk UK.
Easily the funniest thing I have ever read.

Hyakuchoubayashi by Sophonisba. Gundam Wing / Winnie the Pooh. Link broken.
If you read nothing else I have ever recced or will ever rec, read this. "The Solitary Dragon, Uufei, stood by himself in a peppery corner of the forest, his arms folded, his head to one side, and thought about things. Sometimes he thought to himself, 'Why?' and sometimes he thought, 'Wherefore?' and sometimes he thought 'Inasmuch as which?' -- and sometimes he didn't quite know what he was thinking about. So when Hiiro Yui came stomping along, Uufei was very glad to be able to stop thinking for a while, in order to say 'Ikaga desu ka?' in a gloomy manner to him."

Rattlesnakes by Trixie. Gundam Wing.
Everybody in this story is fucked up, in one form or another. But it's a good thing! Because, see, the fuck-ups are different and explained, and they are what drive the story instead of just being there to torture the characters. Plus, Trowa and Duo are sweet. Plus it regularly has lines like: "The receptionist for the garage was a woman in her thirties who wore a lot of makeup. So much so that Trowa found it distracting talking to her. He was a little concerned that maybe a giant chunk would fall off, and he would have to pretend not to notice."

The Beginning of the End by Josselin. Queer as Folk US.
"He didn't realize the mistake right away, of course, because when he came back and found Emmett busy regaling the kid with stories of his youth in Hazelhurst--what it was like when he came out to his mother, how sad he was when his puppy was run over by an ice cream van, how the other kids called him a sissy, his uncle Herb's favorite kind of salad dressing--and all other sorts of Southern bullshit that Emmett liked to spout, the only thing Brian worried about was that Emmett might kill the kid of boredom."

Heritage by Maya. Yami no Matsuei
Short, tricky, delightful.

Glass Houses by Viridian5. Weiss Kreuz.
Alternate universe, a work in progress. Random, funny, sweet, intense, violent, lovely. I have nothing coherent to say about this.

Volcanoes Melt You Down by winter baby. BtVS.
Willow and Giles, after the end of the series, trying to make it make sense and succeeding too well. Ouch.

Ozone by Pru. Prince of Tennis.
"The locker rooms at Sengoku Elementary school were cleaned meticulously three times a week with a substance that smelled entirely too much like cheap perfume, and the scent permeated his memory. Every time that Fuji picked up his racket thereafter, even when he came to love tennis, fiercely and terribly, he breathed in and felt that overpowering stench of rotting flowers and bleach."

The Dresden Dolls. Music.
Not fiction, but a fucking cool band. Listen to all of the songs available, download "Coin Operated Boy" and "Girl Anachronism". The downloadable version of "Girl Anachronism" is different from the streaming version, and I think it's far better. Go, listen, decide for yourself.

In A Name by afrai. Discworld.
Vetinari and Vimes. Takes Night Watch, already unbelievably good, and adds to it. The best stories give you a piece of the characters you love, something you didn't know they were missing but once it's given you can't imagine them without it.

Partnership by shalott. LA Confidential.
If Bud had stayed in LA instead of leaving with Lynn, this might have happened. Glossy and scratchy, sweaty and lovely and real.

In Passing dot org. Website.
"Whoa! Is this table ... or ... What, are you getting taller, or ...?"
"Oh, um, no, I, I think it's because ... because I'm sitting --"
"Oh, right, okay. Ha-ha."
"Yeah. I'm sitting on my feet."
"Right."
"Right."
"Yeah."
"OK."
(long pause)
"Are your feet getting bigger?"

Hamlet: The Text Adventure. Insanity.
"Othello pulls a scimitar out of his robes and neatly bisects me."

five by sinsense. Gundm Wing.
The summary says, "Quatre, smiling." This ficlet shows how he holds the five of them together, and what it means to be the center of the group, and smiling.

Harlequin Airs by Ellis Ward. The Professionals.
Alternate Universe. Long. There are a few grammatical mistakes, two or three cringe-worthy lines (which is only to be expected for a story this size. It's to be expected for a story half this size), and one inexplicable reference to "Doyle's breasts". It also has one of the least melodramatic, nicest Bodie/Doyle relationships I've read, cool original characters, and a tiger. Also, Doyle does trapeze.

Partners by Pat Foley. Man From U.N.C.L.E.
Gen. Illya and Napoleon love each other so much. You know, in that way that's platonic and all about being international superspies.

Loaded by . Everwood/Lotrips crossover.
Ephram writes the score to a movie Orlando Bloom is acting in. Wackiness ensues.

The Vodka Affair by PJ Howard. Man From U.N.C.L.E.
Illya is the coolest, and this fic tells you why. The part with the fake German accents bugs me a little, but the rest of it is very much fun.

A Little Darkness by Jackie Thomas. Man From U.N.C.L.E.
Alternate Universe, I think. This looks at what Illya and Napoleon might be like if they'd met in college. Sad and low-key and sweet.

Massive Attack by bj. Everwood.
"Ephram is nodding his head rhythmically and tapping his pencil on his notebook. Colin leans closer and sees that Ephram's eyes are closed. There is a faint tinny noise coming from the unfortunate-looking discman. Colin watches Ephram immersed in whatever he's hearing, it doesn't sound that great from outside Ephram's head. Colin would like to be between Ephram's ears. Ephram's lips start moving and Colin figures he must really like this song. He wishes he could hear it, because he really likes Ephram and if Ephram likes this song he's pretty sure he'd like it too."

Penny Dreadful by Bill Spratch. Original.
"A large jar of pennies is of little value once you consider the time and trouble of counting and rolling. This jar is best used as a percussive instrument to shake and rattle and keep the time as your friends dance around the room and sniff at the metal tang on their fingers."

Lovely by Martha. Stargate/Sentinel crossover.
Gen. Set after "The Light", Daniel runs away from the SGC, and finds Jim and Blair in Cascade. As a story, it's interesting and very well-written, and as a crossover it blends the two universes perfectly.

Repair Work by Sparcck. Sports Night.
This is hot. Also, sweet. Also, with the nice, Sorkinesque dialogue. And hot.

Waiting for the Big Boom by Sabine. The West Wing.
Josh and Sam meet in jail, and talk about politics. This should be canon, this should be exactly how they met.

Stop Restless by kate. Roswell.
I cannot possibly describe how strange and lovely this story is, so I won't even try. The inside of Kyle's head, what he wants and what he thinks he can't get, and so poetic and painful.

Girls Grow Quicker Than Books by Kyra Cullinan. Narnia.
Oh, Lucy. It's easy to forget, in the middle of reading the books and seeing the children there, that Lucy and Edmund and Peter had to leave, and were told they couldn't come back. Kyra looks at what that would do to a child, what it would do to Lucy, and all I can do is ache for her.

When I Am King by Demian.5. Online comic.
I've been coming back to this comic for about seven months, over and over, and it's still one of the prettiest and craziest and weirdest and just best things I've ever seen. I cannot tell you how much I love this, how happy it makes me.

Reduction by colleen kane. Hard Core Logo.
I really like her writing style, especially in this story. It's basically just Billy writing a song, but it's also everything he's thinking and feeling, the way he misses Joe and the way Joe's still lurking in all the little corners of his head, and his life.

On Impermanence: Xander by Dale. Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Part of a series of sketches, each one about the characters and, yeah, impermanence. This is just so lovely, real and dreamlike at the same time, and it's Xander, his voice, his thoughts.

Dick by Basingstoke. Hard Core Logo.
Oh my god, so fucking cool. Short, squicky, perfect.

Hard/Work by Makiko. Farscape.
Oh, fuck me. This is Aeryn, this is Aeryn, perfectly, down to her toes, through the tips of her hair, vulgar and yearning and rough and sexual in the most surprising ways. Just, oh my god.

In The Waiting by Rheanna. Angel.
A very interesting premise that she pulls off delightfully. Angel, as seen from a third party, trying to deal with his friends and his life and his curse.

Forgotten Girl by Mary Borsellino. Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Neverwhere.
To me, this is what crossovers are all about. It takes the canon of both fandoms and squishes them together until all the loveliness just slops over the side.

I Should Be On Television by Viridian5. Twitch City.
So meta I almost ate my own hand. If you know anything about the show Twitch City or about due South, you'll love this.

Mimes by Viridian5. Hard Core Logo.
Short and sweet, it's a perfect example of the Joe/Billy relationship, with the tiniest bit of an edge because Joe's thinking about more than just friendship. Oh, and I love the last line, so much.

The Dead Baby Monkey Chronicles by Jack. Original fiction. Chapter listing:
Chapter One
Chapter Two
Chapter Three
Chapter Four
Chapter Five
Chapter Six
Chapter Seven
Chapter Eight
Chapter Nine
Chapter Ten
Chapter Eleven
I have no way to describe this. Jack and his Dead Baby Monkey, the trials and tribulations of a surrogate parent, and it's hilarious and fucking brilliant and makes me happy.

Xeriscape by Kat Allison. Hard Core Logo.
A story of John Oxenberger, poetic and reeling, with these descriptions that just floored me. He has a conversation with Billy, which of course I loved, but the story is really about John himself, the stuffed man, Johnny, the Ox, my poor John and the way he orbits and spins.

Scenes of Passion by Stubbleglitter. Gosford Park.
See, now, I thought Henry was a little prick when I watched the movie. I'd never thought of him like this, how it must have hardened and chilled him to get to where he was, everything he must have gone through, all the tiny little cuts in him, and all the ways he betrayed himself. Stubbleglitter takes us to before the movie starts and shows us who Henry is, why he does what he does.

The Man I Killed by Daniella Scrima. Original fiction.
I have no idea what this is, but I can't stop rereading it. Savage, raw, poetic, and just beautiful.

Trajectories by Match. Milli Vanilli.
This story is honest and savage and it describes their isolation and disfunction and possible affection so beautifully. I actually understand Rob and Fab here, and I have absolutely no desire to laugh at them. This story is amazing because it asks for my respect for the characters, and gets it.

Pretty Good Year by Mary Borsellino. Lord of the Rings.
FrodoSamRosie, whee. This pairing, this whole series, makes me squeal like a little girl. This is what happens in the year between Frodo and Sam coming home and Frodo leaving for the Gray Havens. It's sweet and and sad and rich and gorgeous and, and. Just read it.

Stop The War by Cinna P. Bob Dylan/Robbie Robertson.
What I love about this, besides just the idea of a Bob Dylan story, is Cinna's narrative voice. She's honest about her characters, and she makes them interesting and sympathetic, well-drawn and well-spoken and it's just a really wonderful read. A work in progress, link to the first section.

Bound by Mary Borsellino. Lord of the Rings.
Part of Dale's Ring Challenge, this is an AU where Frodo keeps the ring instead of destroying it. Beautifully horrific, is the best way I can describe it.

Void by Wax Jism. The Faculty.
I have no words. Violence has never been this sexy. Dark and savage, I cut my fingers on its edges the first time I read it. And the second and the third and the fourth, and on and on. A work in progress.

I Remember California by Jess. Beverly Hills 90210.
You have to understand, I never liked Beverly Hills 90210. Not at all, not at all. And this story makes me not only sympathize with the characters as characters in the story, which is what all good fiction should do, and sympathize with the characters as part of the fandom, which all good fanfiction should do, but it made me like the show.

Undersun by Cara Loup. Lord of the Rings.
This is an interesting concept, seeing Frodo and Sam and the quest from the eyes of Gollum, but Cara writes it as more than just an interesting concept. We get inside Gollum's head, we see everything the way he sees it, and believe what he's telling us, and want him to succeed. It's creepy and gorgeous and twisted, and the last line is fucking perfect.
